ACP #11

This week on All the Cool Parts, I'm presenting John Eliot Gardiner's 1987 recording of Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo.  This, one of the very first operas, features many interesting moments and some awesome music.  I walk you through the interesting points and guide you through the story as I play the excerpts.

Also on this weeks ACP Idol we feature percussionist John Astaire performing the second part of Iannis Xenakis' Rebonds.

ACP #10

This week on All the Cool Parts, I'm starting a new series of presenting the Laureate series of CD's put out by the Naxos label.  The first disc I chose to present is that of classical guitarist Steve Kostelnik.  Joining us as our special guest co-host this week is musicologist and composer Dr. Jonathan Kulp.  We had a great time recording this one!

Also, this week we feature City Walks for string quartet by composer Michael Kaulkin as part of our All the Cool Parts Idol series.

ACP #8

This week on All the Cool Parts we have a very special guest - Randy Jordan from the #1 World of Warcraft podcast on the internet, The Instance.  Randy kindly joined us for an in depth discussion on the music being written for video games - and in particular the music of Jason Hayes and Russell Brower for the MMORPG, World of Warcraft.  This might surprise some of you - I mean - video game music??

The music for video games is really coming into its own (much like film music did in the last century), and is becoming a real outlet for new classical music to be written.  Millions of young new fans are being made daily because of this music, and I felt it was something worth presenting, and definitely time to stop ignoring.

This is our longest podcast yet, but well worth it.  Randy and I had a blast recording this episode, and are talking about doing it again in the future, when the next WoW expansion Cataclysm is released and we have a whole new cache of music to talk about.

ACP #7

This week on All the Cool Parts, we present the choral music of Eric Whitacre, as performed by the Polyphony chorus directed by Stephen Layton.  Whitacre's music has become extremely popular, especially in the choir and concert band worlds, and he is rapidly becoming one of the most performed living American composers period.

Also, we present our All the Cool Parts Idol #2.  In this installment, we hear Prologue by Seattle based composer J.C. Combs.  Prologue is part of a larger work entitled Minstrel Nomadic, and can be purchased HERE.  J.C. also runs Improv Friday, and is the founder of this weekly event.

This week on All the Cool Parts, we present the 2008 recording of Avant Pop band Electric Kompany, and feature our very first interview with guitarist and EK founder Kevin Gallagher!  We talk about many interesting and varied things - among them the music on the disc and the composers who wrote that music - Jacob T.V., Marc Mellits, David Langanella and Nick Didkovsky.  I also said I would put a link to more information on spectral music in the show notes, so here it is :)

ACP #5

This week on All the Cool Parts, I present the 2008 release Go Crystal Tears - a collaboration of counter tenor Andreas Scholl, lutenist Julian Behr, and the viol consort Concerto di Viole.  The disc features music by English renaissance composers John Dowland, John Ward, John Benet, Robert Johnson, William Byrd and Alfonso Ferrabosco the younger.

In Addition - we finally have the first installment of All the Cool Parts Idol!!  Our first submission comes from composer Jessica Rugani.  We present her piece Nymphshadow, for flute and bowed piano.  You can learn more about the bowed piano here.
